On a warm Tuesday morning in Chelmsford 20 participants arrived at Harway House at Chelmsford ABC to take part in the GB Boxing Tutor course delivered by ABAE Advanced Coach “Q” Shillingford.
The group of 20 were a wide mix of abilities including current boxers, teachers, youth workers, volunteers, novices and a level 2 coach and a level 3 Senior coach. There were 13 males and 7 females taking the course ranging from 18 years old to their late 40’s.
The morning started off with an introduction to the tutor course and the GB boxing awards and success stories of how beneficial the GB Boxing awards can be to being taught in schools, youth clubs and even boxing clubs. It was made clear the difference between a boxing tutor and a boxing coach and that tutors give an introduction to the sport and teach the basics, so that coaches can focus on the coaching side and competitive boxing.
The participants then began the practical side of things which took them through the warm up and fun side of boxing followed by the technical side of boxing in the afternoon session. All of the tutors enjoyed the course and found it very beneficial in their future delivery of non contact boxing sessions.
Essex BDO Afsheen Panjalizadeh said “The GB Boxing Tutor Course really do give boxing coaches and youth leaders a great way of getting the basic teaching skills across as well as keeping it fun for large groups. The resources that participants come away from the course are worth the cost itself with numerous teaching books and DVD’s filled with minute by minute session plans and information. The number of boxing tutors across the area will increase the number of people participating in boxing either recreationally or competitively as both complement each other. The students will be taught the basics of boxing which will enable them and give them the confidence to walk into any boxing gym and be coached to a higher standard.”
There will be 2 more tutor courses later in the year with the possibility of one being held in Southend and one in Chelmsford. For more info about the GB National Boxing Awards and on how to book onto a course please visit http://www.boxingawards.co.uk or contact the Essex BDO on 01245 264 783
