Twelve students at Parrs Wood High School in Manchester; have recently completed the Preliminary National Boxing Award. The project involved one session per week where the pupils worked on their boxing technique, fitness, and also goal setting and personal development.

The course was delivered by female boxer Stacey Copeland, who won the ABA novices championships in December 2011, and works in the school’s inclusion department. “We are very proud of our group for successfully completing the award. They each had different barriers to face and some of them have made rapid progress in terms of technique, fitness, and self esteem.”

To celebrate their achievement, the group received a visit from Sky Sports athlete mentor, Neil Danns. Neil presented the awards and gave a talk on the six steps to success as outlined by the British Athletes Commission. The twelve pupils also assist with the Parrs Wood High School afterschool boxing club which is offered to pupils of all ages, and will begin the Standard award after Easter.
