St Peter’s ABC and Champions 4 Change delivering the GB Boxing Awards at Plumstead Manor Girls School

Congratulations to the 50 + year 10 students from Plumstead Manor for their hard work and dedication whilst completing the Preliminary Boxing Award programme. Throughout the programme the students showed a high level of discipline and respect to both their class mates and the Boxing Tutors from St Peter’s ABC and Champions 4 Change.
Over the 8 week period the students really applied themselves well and worked well as a team to help each other develop and grow. “It was great to see the girl’s enthusiasm and determination as the programme went on, the majority had never done any form of boxing before but all said that they loved it and want to continue in the future. A number of the girls now attend the Women’s only Boxing sessions help at St Peters ABC”.

The success that was achieved at Plumstead Manor is a great benchmark and really shows that boxing is for everyone. One of the highlights other than awarding the students with their preliminary awards certificates and medals was the interest from a number of students in doing the Boxing Tutor Course. They said “We really want to further build and develop our new skills, and hopefully one day we can teach other young people Boxing and give them Awards. It has helped us with our confidence and self-esteem. We also feel safer when travelling around as we know some self-defence”

There is hopes that St Peters will host its annual club show at Plumstead Manor later in the year as it has some great facilities and space. If all goes to plan all of the students that took part in the programme will be invited to the show and possibly do an exhibition at the beginning to open up proceedings. In addition to this Scott said “The platform that Boxing Awards provides is exceptional, seeing these young people grow is incredibly rewarding. I am going to invite Q Shillingford as a guest of honour to the show as he is the man that has put all of this together and a truly inspirational guy”

Special thanks to Boxing Awards, Plumstead Manor and their great team also to England Boxing for funding such an impactful project. Hopefully these projects can be built upon and delivered in other schools around the Greenwich Borough.
Well done to Scott O’Connor at St Peter’s ABC and Champions 4 Change for his continuous efforts to engage with and inspire young people in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

CONTINUED SUCCESS FROM CHAMPIONS 4 CHANGE DELIVERING THE GB NATIONAL BOXING AWARDS PROGRAMME TO SEVEN MORE YOUNG CARERS IN GREENWICH

Congratulations to the 7 Young Carers that have now completed the GB National Boxing Standard Award Boxing programme. These are our latest young carers to join the Wall of Champions at St Peter’s Amateur Boxing Club.

The Young Champions Boot Camp (YCBC) is the flagship programme by Champions 4 Change in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich Early Help Children’s services team. This means that the programme is now in full flow and is doing back to back Award Programmes for a the youth community in Greenwich and Woolwich

Champions 4 Change is the brainchild of Scott O’Connor. He created this because he wanted to actively improve the wellbeing of Young Carers by providing them with a structured programme that consists of bi weekly non-combat boxing training sessions.

“The Young Champions Boot Camp provides Young Carers with a safe environment to get active, make friends, and build confidence / self-esteem, manage emotions in a positive way, focus on self-development, work towards formal ASDAN qualifications and work towards becoming a Champions 4 Change Coach in the future” said O’Connor

Champions 4 Change now has its first member transition through the programme and become a fully qualified Boxing Tutor. So a big well done to George King he has said this about the programme and his transition from member to coach “I have been a part of the YCBC since Scott started it 6 years ago. Scott inspired me and made me believe I could do and achieve anything I wanted to. He always made time and listened to me and did everything he could to help me. Over the years as I grew and watched Scott I knew I wanted to do the same, I wanted to be able to help other young people the way he helped me. When I did the course I met Q Shillingford who was amazing I really enjoyed the Boxing Tutor course and felt proud of my achievements when I passed. Now I want to use everything I have learned over the years and help as many young people as possible”

Champions 4 Change is ever growing and its mission to help as many Young People to grow and develop in a positive way is a powerful movement. The mission is clear and the support being shown to the project is gaining momentum every day.

Scott is looking to broaden the range of Young People he is able to support and begin new projects including Champions 4 Change Beat Obesity Boxing, Stop The Knife, Young Offenders, Young Mental Health and Women’s Boxing. All of these projects will be structured in a similar format and the key objective will be to empower young people to grow, aspire and reach/ fulfill their full potential.

Also a massive congratulations to our newest referrals/ members who have joined and fully committed themselves to self-improvement whilst on the Champions 4 Change and Boxing Awards journey.
“A special thanks to Boxing Awards, Royal Borough of Greenwich and St Peter’s ABC for their Support”

Young Champions Boot Camp- Preliminary Awards 1

Congratulations to all members of the Young Champions Boot Camp in Greenwich on passing their GB Boxing Awards ‘Preliminary’ Assessment.

Congratulations to the eight young carers in Greenwich who completed their Preliminary Boxing Awards as part of the Young Champions Boot Camp powered by Champions 4 Change and St Peter’s Amateur Boxing Club www.stpetersabc.com

The Young Champions Boot Camp is the brainchild of Scott O’Connor who set up the YCBC in partnership with Royal Borough of Greenwich and St Peter’s Amateur Boxing Club in Charlton.

“I set up the YCBC to give young carers a safe environment to get active, make friends, build self confidence/ self esteem and manage their emotions in a positive way”

Scott started working with working with young carers in Greenwich over 6 years ago and quickly realised that he could use his boxing skills to help the community.  “In my own life, I have always used boxing as a tool for positive change to maintain a healthy mental and physical wellbeing.  I knew I wanted to teach young carers how to do the same”.  He approached the Early Help Children’s Services at Royal Borough of Greenwich who were delighted to support Scott and encouraged him to set up and run this service.

In order to provide a structured and certified programme, Scott did the GB Boxing Tutor Course  http://boxingawards.co.uk/course-dates/ .  “As soon as I read about this course, I instantly knew that Q Shillingford’s course was the perfect structure to introduce to the Young Champions Boot Camp.  The group loved it because the course is ASDAN recognised and it can on their CV and may help becoming more employable in the future”

The group were over joyed in getting the certificates and they have all signed up to start the Standard Award within the next few weeks. One young carer has plans to book onto the Boxing Tutor course and is inspired to become a coach and help other young carers , the same way Scott has helped him.

“Amazing results for the eight young carers and thank you to Boxing Awards, Royal Borough of Greenwich and St Peter’s ABC for their support”
